Helping you move forward when pain is holding you back.

Injection Therapy

Injection therapy can provide targeted relief for certain musculoskeletal conditions when pain or inflammation is limiting your movement, function or ability to progress with rehabilitation.

Injection therapy can be considered at your initial consultation or at any stage during your care when clinically appropriate.

Targeted Treatment

For some musculoskeletal conditions, pain and inflammation can become a significant barrier to movement, rehabilitation and everyday activity. Injection therapy may be considered as part of your treatment when clinically appropriate, helping to manage symptoms and support your wider recovery plan.

At Midland Physiotherapy, injection therapy is provided following a thorough clinical assessment to ensure it is appropriate for you and your condition.

Injection therapy can form part of your initial consultation, where assessment indicates that an injection may be beneficial, or it can be considered at any point during your course of care if your symptoms, progress or clinical needs change.

What is Injection Therapy?

Injection therapy involves administering medication directly to or around a specific musculoskeletal structure to help manage pain and other symptoms.

Depending on your condition and clinical presentation, an injection may be considered alongside physiotherapy, rehabilitation, activity modification and other appropriate treatments.

The aim isn't simply to reduce pain temporarily. Where possible, injection therapy is used to create an opportunity to improve movement, progress rehabilitation and address the factors contributing to your problem.

When Might an Injection Be Considered?

Injection therapy may be appropriate when:

  • Pain is significantly limiting your everyday activities
  • Symptoms are preventing you from progressing with rehabilitation
  • Pain is affecting your ability to work, exercise or participate in sport
  • Conservative treatment has not provided sufficient improvement
  • Significant inflammation or irritation is contributing to your symptoms
  • Short-term symptom reduction may enable more effective rehabilitation
  • Your clinical assessment indicates that an injection is an appropriate treatment option

An injection will only be recommended when there is a clear clinical rationale and following a discussion of the potential benefits, risks and alternatives.

Conditions That May Benefit from Injection Therapy

Depending on the findings of your assessment, injection therapy may be considered for certain musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Shoulder pain and certain shoulder conditions
  • Subacromial pain and bursitis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Osteoarthritis-related joint pain
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome and other hip-related pain
  • Certain types of bursitis
  • Tennis or golfer's elbow in selected cases
  • Trigger finger and other selected hand or wrist conditions
  • Back and neck pain
  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Other inflammatory or painful musculoskeletal conditions where injection therapy is clinically indicated

Not every painful condition benefits from an injection, and injections are not appropriate for every patient. Your suitability will therefore be assessed individually.

Injection Therapy as Part of Your Care

At Your Initial Consultation

If you're attending Midland Physiotherapy for the first time, your appointment will begin with a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, medical history, medication and relevant clinical factors.

Where injection therapy is clinically appropriate, we can discuss whether this should form part of your treatment pathway.

Your consultation may include:

  • Detailed clinical history
  • Musculoskeletal examination
  • Review of relevant medical history and medication
  • Discussion of your diagnosis or working diagnosis
  • Consideration of whether an injection is appropriate
  • Explanation of benefits, risks and alternative treatment options
  • Treatment and rehabilitation planning
  • Advice regarding appropriate follow-up and aftercare

An injection is never performed simply because one has been requested. The decision is based on clinical assessment, suitability and informed consent.

During Your Existing Course of Physiotherapy

Injection therapy can also be considered at any stage during your care.

For example, you may initially begin with physiotherapy and rehabilitation but find that persistent pain is limiting your ability to progress. If appropriate, injection therapy may then be considered as an additional treatment option.

Your treatment plan can subsequently be adapted to take advantage of any improvement in symptoms and progressively restore movement, strength and function.

More Than Just an Injection

Injection therapy should rarely be viewed as the entire solution to a musculoskeletal problem.

At Midland Physiotherapy, the emphasis remains on understanding why you're experiencing symptoms and what needs to happen next.

Where appropriate, injection therapy may therefore be combined with:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Progressive strengthening and rehabilitation
  • Activity and load modification
  • Manual therapy
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Electrotherapy (e.g. interferential therapy, shockwave therapy)
  • Education and self-management
  • Return-to-work or return-to-sport planning
  • Diagnostic imaging or onward referral where required

This provides a more complete approach to your recovery rather than relying on an injection alone.
