Your First Appointment: What to Know
What to expect at your first visit...
When you arrive at Midland Physiotherapy, you will be warmly greeted by a member of the reception team. They will ask you to complete a patient registration form (which includes you providing consent for us to treat you) and inform you of our attendance and cancellation policies. Therefore, its recommended to arrive at least 5-10 minutes before your first appointment.
Please bring any referral letter(s) or scan reports you may have with you.
If the cost of your physiotherapy treatment is being covered by private health insurance, please ensure you bring your membership details and treatment authorisation code with you.
All appointments with the clinician are confidential. We cannot disclose any information to any other person including your GP or other healthcare professionals without your agreement.
One of our physiotherapists will take a full history, including previous medical history. Due to the nature of our thorough patient assessments, you will be asked lots of questions, including where the pain is, how it started, how it has progressed, and what aggravates and eases it.
Your physiotherapist will complete a full examination and perform a series of movements and tests. Once the examination is complete, they will discuss their findings with you, provide a diagnosis, and discuss your treatment plan including approximate timeframe(s). To do this, we use a variety of resources including diagrams, anatomical models, images, and rehabilitation software. This is also a great opportunity to ask as many questions as you need to get a full understanding of your condition.
Your treatment appointments should relieve symptoms, however, certain assessment techniques, movement(s) or treatments can initially worsen symptoms prior to relieving them. It is not uncommon to feel an increase in pain/soreness later that day or the following day. If at any point you are concerned, please do not hesitate to contact us.
During assessments or an appointment, we want to ensure you are comfortable. Therefore, you are welcome to be accompanied by a friend/relative or you may ask for a chaperone.
Patients under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the initial assessment. If the parent or legal guardian agrees then a 12-16 year old may attend for subsequent appointment without the parent, legal guardian or chaperone. However, this is at the discretion of the clinician. Patients under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.
It is your duty and responsibility to inform the clinician of any medical condition you suffer from, artificial metallic implants (including pacemakers) or joint replacements you have.
If you have any questions throughout the course of your appointment, please do not hesitate to ask.
